DuckStation is a free and open-source PlayStation emulator . It was created in 2019 and is still in active development as of 2023.
Historical
Duckstation was created by Stenzek, already known in the emulation community for his involvement in the development of Dolphin [ 2 ] . Development began in August 2019. Duckstation thus aims to compete with the main existing PlayStation emulators, such as ePSXe and PCSX [ 2 ] .
Features
DuckStation has a user interface using Qt , as well as a full-screen interface usable with a controller.
Rendering can be done either with hardware ( D3D11 , D3D12 , OpenGL , Vulkan ) or software.
Its improvements include increased internal resolution, scaling , and texture filtering. Geometry rendering can also be improved using PGXP ( Parallel/Precision Geometry Transform Pipeline ), which allows for greater geometry accuracy than the original console, making the image less prone to jitter and reducing texture distortion .
Duckstation allows rendering of 3D games with a wide aspect ratio (e.g. 16:9 ) thanks to the Widescreen Hack , without introducing distortion, and while keeping videos in 4:3 [ 2 ] .
Like many emulators, quick start and state saving allow you to resume a game directly by skipping the game startup or resuming a game at a particular point in the game.
Compatibility
The emulator works equally well with PAL and NTSC games . A list of compatible games containing more than 1200 titles is kept up to date by the developers [ 3 ] .
